2022 Dean's Award for COE Graduate Students

On August 24, 2022, the College of Engineering (COE) at National Taiwan University held the annual Dean's Award for COE Graduate Students Award Ceremony, in which a total of 170 master's/PhD students as well as faculty members received the great honor. During the event, the Dean of COE, Dr. Wen-Chang Chen, extended his sincere gratitude to the enterprises which, through their generous, donations have contributed to nurturing high-level and talented individuals in engineering and science. This project has not only facilitated more industry-academia collaboration, but also raised the R&D achievements of both parties.

Dean Chen highlighted in his speech that the purpose of the Dean's Award is to encourage graduate students to focus on high-quality research and thus produce outstanding academic results. With the enterprises’ participation, the diverse research topics conducted by the students and professors will more likely be noticed by these corporate bodies. In this way, the industry and academia can strengthen interactions and exchanges. Furthermore, the gap between university education and the need of enterprises can be bridged in terms of the students' skillsets. This year, a new category Dean's Award for COE Outstanding Advisors was established to acknowledge the faculty members' determined efforts in advising the graduate students and their long-term perseverance in both research and teaching.

2022 marks the third year of the Dean's Award for COE Graduate Students, which is a significant recognition for the outstanding graduate students of the College. During the ceremony, the Dean Chen expressed his gratitude to the donating companies for their support. What is worth mentioning is that the number of donating companies has increased from 17 in 2021 to 27 this year. As a result, the total number of recipients this year is as many as 135. The COE established the Dean's Award for COE Graduate Students in 2020. Each year, every department or graduate institute/program will shortlist the master's or PhD students with the most outstanding research results in accordance with the regulations stipulated by each department. The number of award recipients shall not exceed 5% of the total number of master's/PhD students graduating in that particular academic year. From 2022 on, the number of recipients has been increased from 5% to 10%, and a separate category for thesis or dissertation advisors was also established to recognize the efforts of the award-winning students' advisors. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 master's/PhD students graduating from the COE each year, so the number of the Dean's Award recipients is around 100 or so. Each recipient and their advisor will receive a certificate issued by the COE and a prize of NT$10,000.
