Prof. Hsien-Yeh Chen Rewarded 2021 Taiwan Chemical Industry Forum Outstanding Research Award

Prof. Hsien-Yeh Chen (陳賢燁) from Chemical Engineering leads the research team to develop “Multifunctional and Regenerative Bone Tissue Products”, providing a better treatment for arthritis patients

As the degenerative arthritis patients increase due to population aging, Prof. Hsien-Yeh Chen (陳賢燁) from Chemical Engineering leads the research team across the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Advanced Research Center for Green Materials Science and Technology, and the Molecular Imaging Center to develop “Multifunctional and Regenerative Bone Tissue Products” technology to provide a better treatment for arthritis patients, which is rewarded by TCIA (Taiwan Chemical Industry Association) 2021 Outstanding Research Award.

With breakthrough technology, the research team successfully produces fabrication and modulation of scaffolding materials using a vapor-phase process. This process does not require the use of organic solvents, initiators, catalysts, plasticizers, acids and alkalis, and the reaction efficiency is close to 100% without by-product emissions problems. It is a safe and environmentally friendly process technology only requiring simple equipment and not time-consuming steps with the potential for mass production. Currently, the research team is actively studying how to use this innovative technology, combined with the stem cell precision therapy, to apply to the field of regenerative medicine, expecting to produce tissue engineering materials with more complex functions to provide the better treatment options for arthritis patients who need surgery.
