The 2nd “SEE KAI SHING SCHOLARSHIP” was presented on September 1st, 2019 by President Yung-Hsin JEN (任詠心), the executor of SEE KAI SHING SCHOLARSHIP. Four excellent NTU students from Indonesia (Department of Chemical Engineering, Agronomy, Chinese Literature, and Political Science) are awarded this year. In the award ceremony, President Josua ANDREAS (翁其鴻) of National Taiwan University Indonesian Alumni Association introduced the story of how Mr. Kai-Shing SEE (施啟勝) studied and started the business. And then, Doctor Liang-Kuang CHEN (陳良光) of Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital, Mr. Kai-Shing SEE’s nephew-in-law introduced the spirit and purpose of this scholarship. In the end, Professor Chia-Pei CHOU (周家蓓), NTU Executive Vice President gave encouragement to NTU students from Indonesia, and expected the students to learn from the role model to work hard and explore a bright future. The attendees of the ceremony also included Dean Wen-Chang CHEN (陳文章), College of Engineering, Dean Yao-Wen CHANG (張耀文), College of College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and Chairman Zhi-Yong LIN (林志勇), National Taiwan University Indonesian Alumni Association in Taiwan.

Alumnus Kai-Shing SEE’s (施啟勝) ancestral hometown was in Guangdong, and as his ancestors moved to Indonesia for business, he was born there in 1936. Being smart and diligent in studying, after graduation from high school, Mr. SEE came to Taiwan alone to study at NTU Chemical Engineering Department in 1956, and decided to start his own business in Taiwan after graduation. After the internship in CPC Corporation, he turned into tourism industry, and then entered Pan Am Airlines (泛美航空公司) with excellent performance. Being optimistic, responsible, and possessing great language skills, Mr. SEE was highly appreciated by his supervisor and respected in this field for over 50 career years. He has been the chairman of American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and the president of travel agency, devoting a lot to Taiwan’s tourism industry.

Mr. SEE has been kind and optimistic for his whole life, helping a lot of people with all efforts. He mentioned a lot about his rough journey from Indonesia to Taiwan and the obstacles he had to overcome when facing the stress from academic and economic pressure. Therefore, he decided to do what he could to help the students who come to study from overseas. It’s a pity that Mr. SEE passed away in 2018, and his wife, President Yung-Hsin JEN carried on his spirit and kindness, setting up “SEE KAI SHING SCHOLARSHIP” to take Mr. SEE’s vision into practice and to take good care of the students from Indonesia. Through this scholarship, the NTU students from Indonesia are encouraged to work hard in academic performance without worrying about economic stress and life expenses.

“SEE KAI SHING SCHOLARSHIP” was set up in 2018, which provides scholarship for 2 excellent freshmen who come to NTU to study from Indonesia, offering them continuous scholarship each semester till graduation. Starting from 2021, totally 8 great students will be awarded the scholarship each year. President JEN hopes to spread Mr. SEE’s caring spirit and kindness, carrying on this beautiful story.
