2019 Asian Engineering Deans' Summit

Committed to higher education in engineering and technological innovation, College of Engineering, National Taiwan University (NTU) is honored to host 2019 Asian Engineering Deans’ Summit (AEDS 2019) on May 29th-31st, 2019 in Taiwan at International Conference Hall, Institute of Applied Mechanics, National Taiwan University. The co-organizers include MOST Center for Global Affairs and Science Engagement (GASE) and five engineering colleges from the three universities of NTU System: College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, NTU; College of Engineering, College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and College of Applied Sciences, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST); College of Technology and Engineering, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU).

The Chairperson of AEDS 2019 is NTU Executive Vice President Chia-Pei Chou (周家蓓), and the Lead Convenor is Dean Wen-Chang Chen (陳文章), College of Engineering, NTU. The Co-convenors include Dean Yao-Wen Chang (張耀文), College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, NTU; Dean Jhy-Chern Liu (劉志成), College of Engineering, Dean Chang-Fa Yang (楊成發), College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, and Dean Poki Chen (陳伯奇), College of Applied Sciences, NTUST; Dean Chin-Pao Cheng (程金保), College of Technology and Engineering, NTNU; Executive Coordinator: Associate Dean C. Robert Kao (高振宏) and Associate Executive Coordinator: Associate Dean Chung-Che Chou (周中哲), College of Engineering, NTU.

Presidents from the three universities of NTU System: NTU President Chung-Ming Kuan (管中閔), NTNU President Cheng-Chih Wu (吳正己) and NTUST President Ching-Jong Liao (廖慶榮) all attended and gave speeches at the opening ceremony. Besides, Executive Vice President Ming-Syan Chen (陳銘憲) and Vice President Pai-Chi Li (李百祺) of Research and Development also joined this summit. Being strongly supported by Director Hsiao-Wei Yuan (袁孝維), MOST Center for Global Affairs and Science Engagement and all the professors from the three universities of NTU System, over 130 attendees joined 2019 Asian Engineering Deans' Summit, including over 50 professors of Dean level or above. Most are the exports and scholars from famous universities of engineering and electrical engineering fields in Europe, America, Japan, Korea, China, South Asia, and Australia.

The theme of the summit is “Global Education and Innovative Technology”, which continuously discussed the core issue of previous summits, emphasizing the importance of engineering and research of colleges in Asia Pacific region, and further explored the impact of global engineering education to Asia Pacific region and how human beings can face the challenges and solve the problems with innovative technology.

The former Dean of College of Engineering, The University of Hong Kong: Chair Professor Norman C. Tien (田之楠) and Chairman Chih-Kung Lee (李世光) of Industrial Technology Research Institute, Taiwan were invited to be the Keynote Speakers in the summit, who gave impressive speeches on the topics:“Challenges and Opportunities for Global Engineering Education” and“Digital Economy: Exploring AI, IOT, Blockchain Technology in Various Engineering Applications” respectively.

Six topics included in the summit: global education program and student mobility, AI based educational technology, green technology and sustainable environment, innovative technology and entrepreneurship, international research center with industrial collaboration, and recruitment of international students and/or female students were discussed with interactive opinion exchange in the meeting.

The closing ceremony was held on May 31st, with the inspiring summary speech from AEDS 2019 Lead Convenor: Dean Wen-Chang Chen (陳文章), College of Engineering, National Taiwan University. And at the same time, it was announced in the closing ceremony that the host of next summit (2020) will be The University of Hong Kong.

Asian Engineering Deans' Summit is supported by Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) and co-founded by deans of many top engineering colleges in Asia, to enhance the engineering education and research in the Asia Pacific region. This is an important summit and interaction platform for many experts and scholars of engineering field in Asia Pacific region to discuss the development direction and trend of global engineering education and research. With such great importance and impact, the summit attracted over one hundred of deans and scholars of engineering and electrical engineering fields in Europe, America, Japan, Korea, China, South Asia (such as Indonesia, Philippine, Malaysia, Thailand, India, and Sri Lanka) to join and have academic interaction with enthusiasm every year.
