Congratulations to Prof. Y. B. Yang on being awarded the Corresponding Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences

ˇ@ˇ@Y. B. Yang, our Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, was awarded the ˇ§Corresponding Memberˇ¨ of the Austrian Academy of Sciences on May 23, becoming the first person in Taiwan to obtain this great honor. The prize is assessed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and regarded as the highest honor of the Austrian academic circle.

 

ˇ@ˇ@The Austrian Academy of sciences was founded in 1847, quoting the Royal Society in London and the Academy of Sciences in Paris as models to use, equaling to our Academia Sinica in positions. The Academy represents a learned society like the great European academies on the one hand and Austria's leading non-university institution for basic research on the other. It is currently promoting 65 research institutions. The Academy consists of two sections, the Section for Mathematics and the Natural Sciences and the Section for the Humanities and the Social Sciences. By way of election, scholars from Austria and abroad are included among the full members, corresponding members or the honorary members of the Academy. According to the statutes of the Academy full members are limited to the number of 90 (45 scholars for each section), while 250 scholars (125 for each section, 55 of which from Austria and 70 from abroad) can be appointed corresponding members. The Academy unveiled its 24 members newly elected this year and reported that among the 12 corresponding members, Prof. Y. B. Yang was the only one in Asia.

 

ˇ@ˇ@Professor Yang is one of the Distinguished Professor in the department of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University, taking the responsibility for the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan as the Secretary General at the same time. He was once elected the Dean of Engineering College, NTU and appointed the Chairman of Civil Engineering Disciplines, National Science Council and so on. In addition, Professor Yang has brilliant performances in Academic circle as well; he obtained many important academic prizes like Outstanding Research Award of National Science Council, Outstanding Teaching Award of Ministry of Education.
