Distinguished Professor Tai-Horng Young of the Department of Biomedical Engineering Receives the TECO Award

Distinguished Professor Tai-Horng Young of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University, who also serves as Director General, Department of Life Sciences, National Science and Technology Council, has been awarded the 32nd TECO Award (Biomedical/Agricultural Category).

The award recognizes his outstanding contributions to research on poly-ε-caprolactone membranes for pneumothorax repair via pleurodesis, demonstrating both effectiveness and safety, and making significant contributions to the development and clinical application of high-risk medical devices. In addition, Professor Young successfully established an efficient, user-friendly system for capturing circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from blood, thereby advancing precision medicine technologies.

 

 

Upon receiving the award, Professor Young expressed his deepest gratitude to his family. He noted that even on a solitary research journey, their support ensured he was never truly alone, always surrounded by warmth. Most importantly, he thanked his beloved parents for their selfless support and love, which gave him the courage to pursue his ideals and persevere along the way. They have been his strongest backing and an enduring source of motivation.

Professor Young also shared that when facing the unknown and various challenges, only by remaining true to one’s original aspirations and seeking truth step by step can one go far and stand firm. He expressed sincere appreciation to his teachers, whose guidance and inspiration enabled him to challenge himself and progressively reach higher academic heights. They served as beacons of wisdom, guiding him in times of uncertainty. He also thanked the more than 80 graduate students he has supervised, emphasizing that the power of a team lies in collaborative harmony—without these partners, today’s achievements would not have been possible.
