The L.-S. Fan Award for Advancing the Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering was approved by the Board of Directors last week as a new Institute Award offered by the AIChE. There are only a handful of Institute awards, one of the highest levels awarded by the Institute. It is a great honor to LS and very prestigious for our department.
This was announced by AIChE at the Gathering of Leadership reception at the April 4, 2025 AIChE spring meeting. The text script for the announcement was as follows:
This week, the AIChE Board approved the creation of a new Institute-level high honor. Thanks to an endowment arranged through the AIChE Foundation, we are establishing an Institute Award in the name of our colleague Liang-Shih Fan of The Ohio State University.
L.–S. Fan is one of our profession’s true trailblazers in particle science and technology, and he has also had a profound impact on chemical engineering education.
The new Institute Award will be called The L.-S. Fan Award for Advancing Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering — and will recognize significant and new contributions that advance the fundamental area of practice in the profession.
The first nominations for this prize will be accepted later this year, with the inaugural presentation slated for the 2026 AIChE Annual Meeting.
We congratulate Dr. Fan for this honor and thank his former students and colleagues for promoting this new prize.
