2024 NTU Engineering Special Contribution Award

2025/1/8

The NTU Engineering Special Contribution Award was established in 2018 to recognize significant contributions of public figures, institutions, and College of Engineering (CoE) alumni toward either the construction of facilities or the academic development of the College. The award winners are presented with trophies at important annual events as tokens of appreciation for their contributions to the College.

The winners of the 2024 "NTU Engineering Special Contribution Award" are Dr. Brian Yishing CHANGLAI and the NTU Institute of Industrial Engineering Alumni Association. On December 31, 2024, a ceremony was held, where CoE Dean Dr. Mao-Hsiung CHIANG presented the award to the recipients on behalf of the College.

The award winners have either devoted themselves to setting up scholarships to encourage outstanding students in the College to focus on their studies and promote practical engineering training, or made generous donations to help the University enhance the quality of its teaching and research. In one way or another, they have contributed much to the development of various affairs at the College. The CoE hereby extends its sincere gratitude for their kind support.

Dr. Brian Yishing CHANGLAI matriculated to NTU's Dept. of Chemical Engineering in 1963. After graduating from NTU in 1967, he went to the United States for further studies and received his PhD in chemical engineering from Clarkson University in New York and MD in medicine from Weill Cornell Medical School. Since then, he has been practicing medicine for more than 30 years without interruption. Both Dr. CHANGLAI and his wife, Dr. Mary Daye, are doctors, and have been giving back to the University and society for many years.

Realizing the importance of engineering education and training, Dr. CHANGLAI generously donated US$71,813.76 in 2019 to establish the "Brian Yishing CHANGLAI, BS'67, MD, PhD, Mary C. Daye, MD and Brian Alfred CHANGLAI, MD Endowed Scholarship Fund" at NTU. Half of the interest from the perpetual fund is used to award the Dept. of Chemical Engineering's "Academic Excellence Scholarship" for outstanding students, while the other half is used to cover the "Chemical Engineering Experiment Report and Creative Competition Scholarship" to encourage students to apply what they have learned in experiments and other practical scenarios.

So far, the scholarships funded by Dr. CHANGLAI have supported 180 recipients of the "Academic Excellence Scholarship" and 33 awardees of the "Chemical Engineering Experiment Report and Creative Competition Scholarship." The scholarships have not only helped to encourage students to focus on their studies, but also promoted practical engineering training and education, showcasing the significance of cultivating outstanding engineering talents.

The NTU Institute of Industrial Engineering (IE) Alumni Association was established in 2022 to strengthen the interaction between IE alumni, the University, and society in general. At the same time, the Association seeks to leverage resources provided by its members to uphold the goal of integrity education and giving back to society. By gathering the strength of IE alumni, the Association wishes to enhance the University's social image, nourish future prospects of cross-disciplinary education, exert the academic influence of NTU, and generate a positive force for society.

The NTU Institute of Industrial Engineering Alumni Association holds academic seminars, promotes industry-academia collaboration and research, and engages in social welfare activities. It also provides members with information on employment, further studies, scholarships, etc., and raises funds to assist the Institute of Industrial Engineering in promoting relevant affairs.

Currently, the teaching and research space of the Institute of Industrial Engineering is located on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Guo-Ching Building, a temporary site before the Institute is relocated to the 4th and 5th floors of the CoE Building. The new location is expected to serve as a more spacious environment for faculty members and students alike. Since the relocation and renovation projects require considerable funds, shortly after its establishment, the NTU Institute of Industrial Engineering Alumni Association donated NT$1.8 million to the dedicated account for the Institute's renovation. In addition, the Association has also provided invaluable support to the Institute's fundraising efforts; so far, it has helped raise more than NT$2 million in total.
