Dean Wen-Chang Chen to Receive Honorary Doctorate from UGA

On June 22nd, NTU College of Engineering Dean Wen-Chang Chen received news from Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) in France that he will be awarded an honorary doctorate, which is expected to be conferred in Spring 2023. Dean Chen will be the first Taiwanese scholar to receive this honor from UGA. The degree will be awarded in recognition of Dean Chen's many years of dedication to groundbreaking research on sustainable and renewable materials, which he collaborated with UGA and the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), as well as his deep commitment to international cooperation and academic exchanges. NTU faculty and students are also delighted to hear the news and would like to express their congratulations to Dean Chen for his remarkable achievements.

UGA is a comprehensive national research university with a nearly 700-year history. It is one of the leading universities in France for its instruction and research, having produced three Nobel Prize winners and a Turing Award winner, and also houses a UNESCO Chair in International Communication. In 2020, UGA invited NTU to form a Strategic Partnership, and NTU's Office of International Affairs and UGA's Office of International Outreach established close ties, holding monthly meetings to exchange information and share opportunities for cooperation. Our two institutions held their first joint academic seminar online in May of this year and are now discussing the possibility of physical visits.

Dean Chen's relationship with UGA goes back to 2011. With support through several international collaborative projects, he was able to open up new areas of research in sustainable and renewable materials. In addition to publishing numerous academic papers, Dean Chen also received the France-Taiwan Scientific Grand Prize in 2018 with Dr. Redouane Borsali. He has continued to foster international cooperation between NTU and UGA, even helping to develop a dual PhD program for talented scholars in advanced R&D. Dean Chen is honored to receive the honorary doctorate from UGA and is particularly grateful for NTU's long-term support and the efforts of his students. He will continue working to help guide talented scholars in polymeric materials research at both NTU and UGA.
