Prof. Steven S.-S. Wang Awarded the “2019 AFOB Excellent Service Award”

Professor Steven S.-S. Wang of the Department of Chemical Engineering received the “2019 AFOB Excellent Service Award” presented by the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB) at the 25th Symposium of Young Asian Biological Engineers’ Community (YABEC 2019), which was hosted by Ewha Women's University of Korea on November 22 and 24, 2019. The award was presented in honor of Professor Wang’s significant contribution to organizing the YABEC 2018 Symposium, as well as his dedication toward assisting in various academic activities associated with the Asian Federation of Biotechnology.

Professor Wang has long been devoted to research in relevant topics of protein aggregation diseases and his interest in establishing a fundamental understanding of how protein aggregation diseases occur. Using both engineering and biological tools and methods, Professor Wang’s goal is to seek out potential compounds/molecules, cures and preventive strategies for these protein aggregation-related diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, prion disease, and cataract. In addition, Professor Wang is also working on topics related to “Biotechnology meeting Nanotechnology”: 1) synthesizing new materials on the nano-scale using biomolecules with special features and properties 2) developing sensitive detection systems by combining biomolecules and nanoparticles/nanomaterials.

In terms of contribution of services, Professor Wang held the position of YABEC regional delegate of Taiwan during the years between 2015 – 2018. He was responsible for forming/assembling groups of Taiwanese scholars/researchers as representatives to participate in the annual symposium of YABEC during the four years of service as regional delegate, organizing and hosting the Symposium of YABEC 2018 in Taiwan, and serving as the Chairman of the Symposium of YABEC 2018. Currently, Professor Wang is the Executive Board Member of Asian Federation of Biotechnology, the Executive Director of the Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering Society of Taiwan (BEST), and the Co-chair of both Committee of International Affairs and Committee of Youth Affairs. He is also an Editor of a peer-reviewed SCI journal “International Journal of Biological Macromolecules” (IF=5.162 (2020)).
