On August 24, 2023, the College of Engineering (CoE) at National Taiwan University held the annual Dean's Award for CoE Graduate Students Award Ceremony, in which a total of 178 master's/Ph.D. students and faculty members received the great honor. During the event, CoE Dean Dr. Mao-Hsiung CHIANG commended the award-winning students for their dedication to research, and extended his sincere gratitude to the advisors for their hard work as well as the enterprises supporting this meaningful award through generous donations on an annual basis. In a bid to recognize the enterprises' invaluable support, the Dr. CHIANG also presented certificates of appreciation to the enterprises at the ceremony. Research poster presentations followed the ceremony at the newly inaugurated New CoE Building (formerly the historical "Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Building"), where the students and their advisors exchanged ideas and research results with representatives from the enterprises.

In his speech, CoE Dean Dr. Mao-Hsiung CHIANG related that this year (2023) marked the fourth year of the Dean's Award for CoE Graduate Students, now a significant recognition for the outstanding graduate students of the College, and that the award shall, as conceived by NTU President Dr. Wen-Chang CHEN when he established the award as CoE Dean, continue to improve the research quality of CoE graduate students by incentivizing them to focus on research and produce outstanding academic results. This year, 89 master's/Ph.D. students received the award, a record-breaking high number throughout the years, with the awardees standing out from almost 1,000 qualified competitors this year. During the ceremony, Dr. CHIANG specially expressed gratitude to the enterprises for attending the award ceremony and for sharing their insights on the research with the award-winning students and their advisors. The list of attending enterprises includes Marketech International Corp., Unimicron Technology Corp., Taiwan Cement, Ltd., Innolux Corp., Walsin Lihwa Corp., C SUN Mfg., Ltd., Gallant Micro. Machining Co., Ltd., YOKE Industrial Corp., Delta Electronics, Inc., PEGATRON Corp., United Microelectronics Corp., BenQ Materials Corp., AG Materials Technology Co., Ltd., United Orthopedic Corp., YJHW STUDIO, Onyx Ta-Ho Environmental Services Co., Ltd., etc. All these enterprises have kindly donated to the Dean's Award for CoE Graduate Students for years to support the cultivation of high-level engineering and scientific talents and to facilitate more industry-academia collaboration at the same time. Such stimulation has undoubtedly inspired more CoE students to conduct ground-breaking research, thereby enhancing their competitiveness in diverse fields.

The CoE established the Dean's Award for CoE Graduate Students in 2020. Each year, every department or graduate institute/program will shortlist the master's or PhD students with the most outstanding research results in accordance with the regulations stipulated by each department. The number of award recipients shall not exceed 5% of the total number of master's/PhD students graduating in that particular academic year. From 2022 on, the number of recipients has been increased from 5% to 10%, and a separate category for thesis or dissertation advisors was further established to recognize the efforts of the award-winning students' advisors. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 master's/PhD students graduating from the CoE each year, so the number of the Dean's Award recipients is around 100 or so. Each recipient and their advisor will receive a certificate issued by the CoE and a prize of NT$10,000.
